Her attacker behind bars, fear no longer rules

She bought a gun and kept it in bed with her as she tried to sleep.

She traded a comfortable home for an apartment complex with plenty of lights outside and people inside.

Still, a year would pass before she felt secure enough that memories of her encounter with the man now believed to be a brazen serial predator in several states no longer would taint every choice she made.

Only after learning that Joshua Michael Ridings, the man linked by DNA to her attack and the vicious abduction and assault on an 11-year-old West Virginia girl, had been identified and jailed could the woman who helped to bring about his arrest finally relax.

"[I was] the most friendly, outgoing person you'd ever meet. I'm not so friendly anymore," said the 32-year-old woman, who lives with her 2-year-old child in Leitchfield, Ky.

Strength of Toyota's Prius brand could lead to other styles under that ...

Toyota Motor Corp. dominated the hybrid market with its Toyota and Lexus offerings and sold more than 181,000 Prius hybrids in 2007, an increase of about 68 percent over the previous year.

The latest iteration of the Prius was introduced in 2004, and company officials have been mum on when a new Prius will be released to the public.

Ubifone, Skype Free Internet Mobile Phone Calls War Begins

In addition, Skype has used their millions of customers as guinea pigs as they debugged their original free Internet phone service. They should not be putting these same good people back into a test laboratory with "beta" software. Lastly, to add insult to injury, Skype will now be asking these same people to pay a fee to take part in their market research."

The benefits of Ubifone over Skype and other traditional VoIP free Internet phone services are greatest for people and companies who regularly make international calls from and to mobile phones. The services use "voice over Internet protocol" (VoIP) technology that chops up speech into small packets of digital information and sends them over the Internet just like e-mails.

The disadvantage with Skype in comparison to Ubifone, and similar services offered by free Internet phone service providers such as Wanadoo, is that Internet phone calls have to be made from the computer and can only be received if the machine is left switched on.

OPERA By Fiona Maddocks

KOSTAS SMORIGINAS Kostas Smoriginas is a 27-year-old bass-baritone from Vilnius who provoked excited gossip after the Cardiff Singer of the World competition two years ago when he represented Lithuania. He's talked of as the next Hvorostovksy - dark-toned, vocally "smouldering", a Wagner natural of the future and cute with it.

After graduating from the Music and Theatre Academy in Lithuania (his teacher in Vilnius is now Minister of Culture) he studied at London's Royal College of Music and is now a Royal Opera Jette Parker Young Artist. He makes his Covent Garden debut as Marquis d'Obigny in La Traviata (14 January) followed by Angelotti in Tosca and Flemish Deputy in Don Carlo. Hear him in a free lunchtime recital in the Royal Opera's Crush Room, on 18 February, 1pm.

MADDIE IS STILL ALIVE, SAY COPS

Detectives have spent the past six months working on the theory that Maddie was accidentally killed by her parents Gerry and Kate.

But following a face-to-face meeting with British forensic experts last week they have admitted they have no proof she died in her holiday apartment.

Now, after six months of being convinced Maddie was killed, they are re-focusing their efforts on trying to find her alive. And they reckon she could be living with her captor.

We do not have proof the girl is dead, a senior police source said last night. If we had that kind of evidence we would not be considering the theory she was abducted.

We are no longer sure that she is dead.

Officers had been investigating the theory that Gerry and Kate had accidentally killed Maddie with an overdose of sedatives.

Nearly half the doctors in a survey admitted to using placebos. These are pills that have no proven benefit relevant to your problem, but they might make you feel better just because you think they'll help. Sample: 231 Chicago internists. Results: 1) 45 percent said they've used placebos. 2) 96 percent said "placebos can have therapeutic effects." 3) "Most believe in the mind–body connection." Ancient doctor's attitude: I can't explain why this drug would help you, but it will. Modern doctor's attitude: I can't explain why this drug would help you, so it won't. New doctor's attitude: I can't explain why this drug would help you, but it will.
