Arthur Kornberg, Nobel Prize-winning biochemist, dies at 89

Arthur Kornberg, a biochemist whose Nobel Prize-winning discovery of how DNA is assembled helped ignite the biotechnology revolution, died Oct. 26 in Stanford, California. He was 89 and worked in his laboratory at Stanford University until a few days before his death.

The cause was respiratory failure, a spokesman for Stanford said.

Kornberg was one of six Nobel laureates whose sons also received the prize. In 2006, Roger Kornberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for creating the first pictures of how genes convey messages so that cells can make proteins.

In 1959, Arthur Kornberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of DNA polymerase, an enzyme needed to synthesize the master molecule of heredity.

That discovery and later ones became essential steps in gene splicing and other techniques involved in genetic engineering.

Canada Serial Murder Trial Hears of Other Suspects

Prosecutors trying accused serial killer Robert "Willie" Pickton ignored other possible suspects for the murders, including one of his female friends, his lawyers charged on Wednesday.

Pickton's defense team, in the third day of closing arguments, told the jury not to ignore forensic evidence that linked Dinah Taylor to Pickton's suburban Vancouver farm where he is accused of brutally killing 26 women.

"Is the focus of this picture really put where it should be?" lawyer Adrian Brooks asked the jury, illustrating his presentation with slides that showed Taylor's face and evidence collected on the farm, such as clothing that had her DNA.

The defense did not accuse Taylor of the killings.

Taylor was a friend of Pickton's who was arrested early in the investigation but never charged because police said there was no evidence that she was criminally involved.

Silence draws vocal critics

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 12 other states - Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia - also require such moments of quiet in the classroom. In more than 20 other states, teachers are allowed to decide whether they want such a classroom timeout.

U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman in Illinois will hear oral arguments over whether to grant class-action status to the Shermans' case.

In the meantime, Gettleman has ordered Township High School District 214, which oversees Buffalo Grove High, not to have a moment of silence. He also has barred the superintendent of the state school board from enforcing the rule or issuing any directive on how the issue should be handled in other schools.

BILL NEIBERGALL/THE REGISTER

Iowa State University researchers determined earlier this year that 45 percent of 3,683 state linemen surveyed in 2005 were overweight, according to the body mass index, which compares weight to height.

There's more evidence that an increasing number of players at the state's 361 football programs are at greater risk for diabetes, as well as cardio and joint problems. The Des Moines Sunday Register Elite all-state team ballooned to a record average 224.2 pounds per player last year.

Register Elite all-state linemen weighed an average of 258.9 pounds - more than 50 pounds larger than their 1960s counterparts.

Hansen weighed 290 pounds as a junior, then lost 40 pounds from his 6-foot-4-inch frame after cutting down on soda pop and candy while increasing time working out.

Warren man gets 8 years on weapons charges

The men initially went to trial in September on first-degree murder and other charges, but two days into the trial, they pleaded guilty to lesser offenses, avoiding life terms.

Under the deal, Ciarletta faced up to 10 years in prison, and Somerset County Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Rocchietti urged the judge to impose the maximum.

Whitetails gone wild

Best opportunities come when a stand is placed near a scrape, which is where a buck paws the ground bare, marks the spot with urine and perhaps rubs or licks an overhanging branch to leave scent. The stand also could be hung or set up near a heavily used deer trail.

Whitetail hunters sometimes speak of the rut, the pre-rut and the post-rut.

Graham Taylor, the regional wildlife manager for Fish, Wildlife & Parks in Great Falls, says the pre-rut may have already begun.

"Based on my observations just (Sunday), clearly some of the bucks are showing interest," Taylor said. "The bucks are starting to sniff around. No doubt the hormone levels are moving a little and the bucks are showing some antagonism toward each other. They are just getting a sense of what is available in the neighborhood."

But Taylor says when the peak of the rut occurs depends on how you define it.

Thomas Gives Police Tip On Stiles

A flood of tips came pouring in, including one from Chester Stiles' ex-girlfriend Elaine Thomas.

Thomas says, despite this, she was in love with Chester Stiles and even after their relationship ended in 2003 they remained friends.

"This is a man who could show up at my house at 2:30 in the morning and often did. I'd wake up in the morning and he'd be asleep on the couch or watching TV", Thomas says.

But she says she cannot deny that the man seen in the video sexually assaulting a little girl is the same person.

She tipped off police and waited.

"I was afraid that he would show up at my house and ask for help. I was afraid that he would find out that I was the one who ID'd him to the police and would show up at my house angry."

When Thomas heard of his capture, she says "I was elated". But she was surprised by his peaceful surrender.
