Scientists design simple dipstick test for cocaine, other drugs

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a simple "dipstick" test for detecting cocaine and other drugs in saliva, urine or blood serum. The test is based upon DNA-gold nanoparticle technology, and can be packaged in user-friendly kits similar to those used for home pregnancy tests.

Sidewalk spit leads to arrest in home-invasion rape

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Police used DNA evidence to make an arrest Monday in the rape of an 11-year-old girl - a crime in which a man previously arrested was cleared by DNA.Peter Jacob Inouye, 24, of Parkland, was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. as he returned to his parents' house a few blocks from the rape scene, Olympia police said in a news release.Cmdr. Tor Bjornstad said detectives collected Inouye's DNA recently after Inouye spit on the street, and the sample was analyzed by a lab.Bjornstad said an officer watched Inouye spit on the sidewalk, and then rushed to collect that saliva off the sidewalk."I'd say it's unusual and I'd also say it's pretty heads up police work," Bjornstad said. The DNA profile from the saliva matched DNA evidence collected from the victim.Detectives identified Inouye as a person of interest in the case after learning he had been at the victim's home in the last six or seven months, during an event to help her and her family after her father died.He was booked into the Thurston County Jail for investigation of first-degree rape of a child, second-degree assault and first-degree burglary.Last week, a DNA test cleared David Lukas Lynch, 23, of rape charges.

Police suspend use of discredited DNA test after Omagh acquittal

The police last night announced the suspension of the use of a specific DNA technique in the light of the collapse of the trial of the man accused of the Omagh bombing. The Crown Prosecution Service also announced it was reviewing upcoming cases in which the so-called low copy number DNA was part of the prosecution.

Tony Lake, chief constable of Lincolnshire who speaks for the Association of Chief Police Officers on forensic science matters, said the police were studying the implications of the Omagh case which was thrown out over doubts about the low copy number evidence. "Whilst this is being considered, the police are operating an interim suspension of the use of the LCN DNA testing service," he said.

The Acpo decision followed advice from the CPS and discussions with the Home Office.

Cue the gluttony

That would be much easier, the researchers add, than overcoming human nature. The theory that our society -- not us -- is to blame for our overall expanding waist size is garnering support from health and nutrition experts. To recap the dismal statistics: In the last 25 years, the number of obese Americans has increased from 14.5% to 32.2%. Two out of three adults are overweight, as are 19% of children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Almost everybody is gaining weight in almost all socioeconomic groups. It's not limited to certain people. It's everywhere," says Dr. Deborah A. Cohen, a senior natural scientist at Rand Corp. and the author of a recent paper on the environmental theory of obesity. "Look at doctors, nurses and dietitians who are overweight or obese.

Witnesses Describe Shooting Scene

My mom was standing with another costumer service employee at the front desk who asked to cover her shift. My mom said she would as soon as she wrapped her last package in the back room. only a moment later when my mom had left for the back room the shooter shot her coworkers all standing at the front desk where she was supposed to be. It's truely TRUELY amazing she's alive. My heart goes out to all of the friends and families of the victims.

I am deeply saddened by what happened. It makes me feel so terrible to know that someone would kill innocent people so brutally. The event has affected so many people and I truly believe it is the power of prayer that will get everyone through this. I am keeping all those victims and the families in my thoughts and prayers.

Harry and the transfer that never was

Speculation runs riot: it's human nature, of course, and it makes people edgy. The thing that concerned all of us was why Harry would leave something so successful of his own creation. He made the environment down here that we all like; we couldn't get our heads round the thought that it might suddenly be taken away from us.

Can you afford to get emotional in football? You're watching television, waiting to hear, and it's a strange time. I'd say that after all my years in the game you get hardened to things. But even I felt the buzz when Harry turned up to take training yesterday morning. I saw him as I arrived at the training ground and it was as if nothing had ever happened, business as usual. But with an extra smile.

The media say Harry thought about it overnight. I can imagine him agonising over that.
