It's how countries from the Netherlands to England have battled the growing threat posed by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and brought soaring infection rates under control.
Now, Loyola University Health System and three local Veterans Affairs facilities are embracing the tactic. Come November, Loyola will start testing all hospital patients for MRSA and taking aggressive steps to prevent its transmission. Hines VA Hospital near Maywood and the North Chicago and Jesse Brown VA Medical Centers implemented what's known as "universal screening" for MRSA at the end of September.

A: What I bring to the table is, frankly, a lot of international experience. The international piece I think is really a big focus item for us, with Philadelphia being the international gateway.

Just when you think the NFL playoffs can't possibly be more boring or more predictable, a day like Sunday jumps up and happens. The defending Super Bowl champions lose at home -- to a team that has more wounded than an episode of M*A*S*H -- and the Dallas/Hollywood Cowboys go down to a team that was suppposed to be firing its coach after a 6-10 season right about now. The only problem with last Sunday is it might -- repeat might -- lead to two one-sided conference championship games this Sunday. Raise your hand if you really think the San Diego Chargers with a hobbled quarterback, a hobbled running back and a hobbled star tight end are going into Foxboro and beating the unbeaten New England Patriots. Raise the other hand if you think the gritty New York Giants with young Eli are walking into Green Bay, in what is supposed to be single-digit weather, and ending the made-for-TV movie that is the 2007 Packers, starring 57-year-old Brett Favre.
Ipswich prostitutes serial murder trial opens
The five dead women were all prostitutes working in Ipswich and their bodies were all found dumped near the town over a 10-day period in December 1996. An investigation began after Miss Nicol was the first to be reported missing on October 30, 2006. The subsequent discovery of five bodies in rapid succession gripped the nation and led to a massive police manhunt with more than 500 officers from 40 police forces across the country working on the case. Wright was arrested on December 19, 2006 at his home in Ipswich where he lived with his partner Pamela Goodman, who worked in a call centre. He was charged two days later with murdering the five women and was remanded in custody at his first court appearance on December 22, 2006. The trial is not expected to hear any evidence today, with the day instead being taken up by administrative matters.
