On homelessness, parking, GMOs, catnip for police officers, Hillary ...

We cannot understand why no one seems to see the need for more parking lots or parking garages in the core city areas. We have shopped in Salem and Portland, where there seems to be plenty of parking space in garages downtown, and they also have outlying malls. We do not have to pay to park when we go there to shop.We feel that our "city fathers" want to keep Corvallis with the "small town" image and this is nice. However, in doing so we also seem to be sending a great deal of business out of our town. Does this make sense?Ted and DorothyRosenbalmCorvallisA little catnip might lighten cops' moodI want to offer the Corvallis Police Department, as a Christmas gift, some nice, potent, high-quality cat weed.I offer this premium catnip with the respectful suggestion, that before they begin each patrol shift, all officers snort it, rub it all over their faces, and roll around in it on the ground. The death of a homeless man sparked temporary good will toward the homeless.I found a dead cat on the road near a camp and figured there must be more.

Bush seeks Saudi support for fragile Middle East peace talks

President George Bush was last night working to persuade Saudi Arabia to maintain its support for a revived, but fragile, Israeli-Palestinian peace process and to confront Iran across the Middle East.

Arriving in Riyadh on the penultimate stage of his regional tour, Bush went into talks with King Abdullah as the administration prepared to notify Congress of a $20bn (£10.2bn) arms package for the Saudis - satellite-guided weaponry and other high-tech munitions - highlighting the oil-rich kingdom's privileged relationship with Washington.

As on his previous stops in the Gulf, the president was given a red carpet welcome, but no public engagements are planned in a country where a recent poll found that his popularity rating was just 12% - less than that of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, or the al-Qaida leader and renegade Saudi, Osama bin Laden.

City may soon keep an eye on motorists, pedestrians

A state Assembly committee held a public hearing Thursday on a bill that would remove legal roadblocks that prevent municipalities from employing cameras at dangerous intersections.

More than 200 cities in 24 states already use traffic control photographic systems, and local police think such a system would deter those who run red lights here.

"People would be less aggressive at a signalized intersection and be less inattentive," said Lt. Dennis Saager of the Wausau Police Department.

Wausau police made 220 traffic stops during a two-week traffic enforcement program in May and June, said Lt. Jim Wadinski of the Wausau Police Department. Half of those stopped were given warnings, and the rest were cited, he said.

Red light running is estimated to cause more than 100,000 crashes and about 1,000 deaths a year in the United States, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Medea's millennium and Nobel Prize winning barbarism

For those who care to press on with me, what arises next is the Human Genome Project … sorry, nothing lighter comes to mind … the leadership of which passed from the hands of a self-confessed eugenicist, or fan of Sir Francis Galton, Nobel Prize winner James D. Watson, to the cunningly persuasive guidance of a Progressive and tacitly pro-abortion Christian, Francis S. Collins. The Genome Nation, so to speak, has used the same strategy which the Progressives used when they replaced Franklin Roosevelt's Vice-President Henry Wallace with the profoundly more homespun Harry Truman. In other words, from Watson to Collins is the same "Progressive card trick," so to speak, as from Henry Wallace to Harry Truman.

America was utterly unaware of the theatrical magic behind what was basically a change in the cast and not one altered syllable in the original, very, very, very Progressive playscript.

Thomas Gives Police Tip On Stiles

A flood of tips came pouring in, including one from Chester Stiles' ex-girlfriend Elaine Thomas.

Thomas says, despite this, she was in love with Chester Stiles and even after their relationship ended in 2003 they remained friends.

"This is a man who could show up at my house at 2:30 in the morning and often did. I'd wake up in the morning and he'd be asleep on the couch or watching TV", Thomas says.

But she says she cannot deny that the man seen in the video sexually assaulting a little girl is the same person.

She tipped off police and waited.

"I was afraid that he would show up at my house and ask for help. I was afraid that he would find out that I was the one who ID'd him to the police and would show up at my house angry."

When Thomas heard of his capture, she says "I was elated". But she was surprised by his peaceful surrender.

December 2007

Mitt Romney sure has, hitting Huckabee with "contrast ads" that paint him as soft on illegal immigrants, soft on meth, soft on convicts. And if you believe the polls, it's working: Huckabee's "miracle" surge into first place is losing steam.

The situation has put Huckabee into an unusual bind. He could respond with a negative ad of his own... something that sounds like... say... THIS:

Announcer: Romney's record, over $700,000,000 in new taxes. Left office with a deficit. No executions. Supported gun control. And Romney's government-mandated health plan provided a fifty-dollar copay for abortion.

Huckabee: If a man's dishonest to obtain a job, he'll be dishonest on the job. Iowans deserve better.

But the problem with that is Huckabee's appeal has been based in no small measure on his image as a jokey, nice-guy preacher.
